What is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a natural plant substance from the group polyphenols. It is found in, among other things, the skin of red grapes, Japanese knotweed, peanuts and certain berries. Plants produce resveratrol as a protective compound against external influences such as fungi and sunlight.

In supplements, a distinction is usually made between two forms: cis-resveratrol and trans-resveratrol. These two forms are so-called isomers: they contain the same atoms, but differ in spatial structure. This structure partly determines the stability and biological properties of the substance.

What is the difference between resveratrol and trans-resveratrol?

Resveratrol is the umbrella name of the substance. Trans-resveratrol is the most researched and common natural form. Some supplements contain a mix of cis and trans resveratrol, while others – like this product – contain only the trans form.

The difference between cis- and trans-resveratrol is in the molecular arrangement around a double bond:

  • Trans-resveratrol: more stable structure and most commonly used shape in scientific research.
  • Cis-resveratrol: less stable and less explored.
