What is berberine?

Berberis aristata is a shrub belonging to the Berberidaceae family and the genus Berberis. The genus Berberis aristata has approximately 450-500 species and is found in the temperate and subtropical regions of Asia, Europe and America. The Berberis aristata originally comes from the Himalayas in India and Nepal. The shrub also occurs naturally in the wet areas of Sri Lanka. 

The Berberis aristata is an upright spiny shrub with yellow-brown woody bark and green, leathery leaves. The shrub grows beautiful yellow flowers and later also bunches of juicy sour edible berries. The bright red berries are suitable for human consumption and are therefore eaten in some countries as a healthy snack or added to desserts in some recipes. This yellow natural substance also occurs in plants such as European barberries, tree turmeric, Oregon grape, marigold, Amur cork tree and Chinese Gold Thread. It is usually found in the roots, rhizomes, stems and bark. Because of its yellow color, Berberis species were used to dye wool, leather and wood.

Berberine for healthy blood sugar levels

Elevated blood sugar levels can have adverse effects on tissues and organs and cause long-term health problems. Type 2 diabetes, a disease that has become increasingly common in recent years, is also caused by elevated blood sugar levels due to insulin resistance or insulin deficiency.

• Store in a cool and dark place, out of the reach of children.

Safe to use

Berberine is safe to use. You can safely use this supplement for 6 months in doses up to 1.5 grams per day. After these 6 months, it is wise not to use the supplement for 3 months before starting again. Common side effects include diarrhea, constipation, flatulence and stomach upset. In case of complaints, halve the dosage and build up again slowly. If complaints persist, reduce the dosage until the complaints stop.
