Berberine Supplement from Hansen

Berberine from the Swedish company Hansen is made from the bark of Berberis aristata, also known as Indian barberry or tree turmeric. It is an all-natural product suitable for vegans and is tested by an independent laboratory for purity, heavy metals and other toxins. Nothing has been added to this supplement, as is the case with berberine capsules or tablets. Fillers, casings or anti-caking agents are added to this. What is the best berberine? If you want to go for the purest form, without additives, you will find the best berberine to buy from us.

What is berberine?

Berberis aristata is a shrub belonging to the Berberidaceae family and genus Berberis. The genus Berberis aristata has approximately 450-500 species and is found in the temperate and subtropical regions of Asia, Europe and America. The Berberis aristata originally comes from the Himalayas in India and Nepal. The shrub also occurs naturally in the wet areas of Sri Lanka.

The Berberis aristata is an upright thorny shrub with yellow-brown woody bark and green, leathery leaves. Beautiful yellow flowers grow on the shrub and later also bunches of juicy sour edible berries. The bright red berries are suitable for human consumption and are therefore also eaten in some countries as a healthy snack or added to desserts in some recipes. This yellow natural substance is also found in plants such as European barberries, tree turmeric, Oregon grape, marigold, Amur cork tree and Chinese gold thread. It is usually found in the roots, rhizomes, stems and bark. Because of its yellow color, Berberis species were used to dye wool, leather, and wood.

Berberine for healthy blood sugar levels

Elevated blood sugar can have adverse effects on tissues and organs and cause long-term health problems. Type 2 diabetes, a disease that has become increasingly common in recent years, is also caused by elevated blood sugar due to insulin resistance or insulin deficiency.

Several studies show that berberine may help improve blood sugar control. The principle works as follows: insulin resistance is reduced, making insulin more effective. Glycolysis increases so that it becomes easier for the body to break down sugars in the cells. Sugar production in the liver is increased, and the breakdown of carbohydrates in the intestines slows down. In a study in 116 people with diabetes, 1 gram daily lowered blood sugar by 20%, from 7 to 5,6 mmol/L. Hemoglobin HbA1c, which is an indicator of longer-term blood sugar levels, also fell by 12%.8

Berberine supports normal cholesterol levels

Elevated cholesterol is also a risk for cardiovascular disease. LDL cholesterol, also known as 'bad' cholesterol, in particular increases the risk of narrowing in the bloodstream. HDL cholesterol, on the other hand, is the 'good' cholesterol with which you can be protected against cardiovascular disease.

Berberine may help support normal cholesterol levels and may assist with the effects of a cholesterol-lowering diet.* According to some studies, this may be due to berberine's inhibitory effect on the enzyme PCSK9, which in turn is positive for clearing LDL from the bloodstream. 9,10. A review of 11 different studies found that total cholesterol was reduced by an average of 0,61 mmol/L (24 mg/dL). In addition, it lowered 'bad' LDL cholesterol by 0,65 mmol/L (25 mg/dL), while 'good' HDL cholesterol rose by an average of 0,05 mmol/L (2 mg/dL).

Berberine helps to lower the fat content in our blood.

Too much fat in our blood can lead to cardiovascular disease, a common cause of death. Berberine works by binding to various substances in our cells, helping to lower fat (triglyceride) levels. Several studies have shown that this substance can reduce the level of fat in our blood by almost 0,5 mmol/LL (44 mg/dL).

Triglyceride is the most abundant form of fat in our body. It has important functions, but if the level in our blood becomes too high (for example, by eating foods high in sugar and fat, too much alcohol or certain medicines), this can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

How do you use berberine?

  • It is very yellow and has a slightly bitter taste. The bitter taste can be masked with salty foods.
  • Most studies used doses between 900 and 1500 mg berberine per day. Depending on the dosage, it is usual to take 500 mg up to 3 times a day before meals.
  • Store in a cool and dark place, out of reach of children.
  • Includes free measuring spoon. The measuring spoon contains 0,35g and is dishwasher safe.
  • Mix it with water and then drink it preferably during meals,
  • Divide higher doses preferably at 2 times during the day

When should you not use berberine:
It is not recommended for use during pregnancy and when breastfeeding and should not be given to children. If you have a medical condition or are taking medication, it is important to talk to your doctor before taking a berberine supplement. Especially for people who use blood sugar lowering drugs.

Safe to use

Berberine is safe to use. You can safely use this supplement for 6 months in doses up to 1,5 grams per day. After these 6 months it is wise not to use the supplement for 3 months before you start again. Common side effects include diarrhea, constipation, flatulence and stomach upset. In case of complaints, halve the dose and slowly build up again. In case of persistent complaints, reduce the dose to stop complaints.
