bakuchiol
Bakuchiol – retinol-like skincare active of plant origin
Bakuchiol is a popular skincare ingredient that is often seen as a gentler alternative within “retinoid-like” routines. You will mainly find bakuchiol in serums, creams and night care that are built around skin texture, more even appearance and a refined look, without it being a vitamin A ingredient.

What is bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol is a plant compound traditionally linked to the Psoralea corylifoliaplant (Babchi), although the origin and purification may differ per manufacturer. In cosmetic formulas, bakuchiol is used as an “active” that fits within modern anti-aging and texture-focused skincare, often in addition to moisturizing and barrier-supporting ingredients.
What does bakuchiol do in skincare?
In skincare, bakuchiol is used to give the skin a smoother, more even and more refined appearance. It is often chosen in routines aimed at visibly improving the look of fine lines, troubled texture and duller skin, and is regularly combined with hydrators and soothing agents to increase wearing comfort. Many brands position bakuchiol as “retinol-inspired” because it can serve a similar purpose in terms of skin appearance within a routine, but with a different ingredient profile.
For which skin types is bakuchiol interesting?
- Beginners in actives: an accessible entry if you want to build up your routine with a texture and glow-oriented active.
- Sensitive or reactive skin: Bakuchiol is often chosen when retinol-like routines are found too intense, although individual testing remains important.
- Combination or troubled skin texture: fits well into routines aimed at a more even skin tone and a refined appearance.
How do you use bakuchiol in your routine?
Bakuchiol is usually used as a serum or cream, often in the evening, but some formulas are also suitable for use during the day. Start slowly (for example every other day) and build up based on skin comfort, and always combine with a moisturizing layer if you notice that your skin feels drier or tight. During the day, a daily SPF makes sense within any active routine, especially if you are working on a more even appearance and skin quality.
Combine Bakuchiol with other ingredients
- Easy to combine: hydrators such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin, barrier ingredients such as ceramides, and soothing ingredients such as panthenol or centella (depending on product).
- Combine with exfoliants: with AHA/BHA or other exfoliants it is smart to alternate (for example not everything in one evening) if your skin quickly becomes sensitive.
- Combine with retinoids: this is possible, but usually only makes sense in a well-constructed routine; prefer to choose one “main ingredient” per evening if your skin is sensitive.
Reading the label: what do you pay attention to?
- Concentration: some products mention a percentage of bakuchiol; this helps when comparing serums and creams.
- Formula base: oil, gel or cream base determines the skin feel and suitability for your skin type.
- Combination actives: check whether it also contains acids, vitamin C derivatives or retinoids in addition to bakuchiol, so that your routine remains balanced.
- Perfume and alcohol: relevant if you are sensitive or want to keep your routine as minimalist as possible.
