What is astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid produced by certain microalgae and also found in marine sources through the food chain. In dietary supplements it is typically supplied as a standardized algae extract or as part of a complex formula, depending on brand and product purpose.

Origin: microalgae (Haematococcus pluvialis)

Many astaxanthin products mention the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis as a source. On the label you will see, for example, “algae extract”, “Haematococcus pluvialis extract” or “astaxanthin”, sometimes with a specification of the content per capsule or per daily dose.

What forms does astaxanthin come in?

• Capsules or softgels: often used with fat-soluble raw materials, depending on the carrier oil and formulation chosen.
• Standardized extract: products sometimes mention mg astaxanthin per dosage and/or details about the algae extract used.
• Complex formulas: combinations with other carotenoids, fatty acids or antioxidant-like ingredients, where the full ingredient list determines.

Reading the label: what do you pay attention to?

• Citation: indicates the algae species (e.g. Haematococcus pluvialis) or “algae extract” clearly on the label?
• Content per dose: compare mg astaxanthin per capsule/daily portion and note the difference between extract amount and active ingredient content.
• Carrier & auxiliary materials: check used oils, capsule material and any additives if a clean label is important to you.
