acerola is, where it comes from and what you can pay attention to when choosing a product.
What is acerola?
Acerola is the fruit of Malpighia emarginata (also called “acerola cherry”). In supplements, acerola is usually processed as acerola extract or acerola powder. Because acerola naturally vitamin C contains, it is often used as a (partly) natural source of vitamin C
capsules, tablets and powders.
Why do you see acerola in supplements?
What forms does acerola come in?
- Acerola powder – dried and ground acerola; often used in powder blends.
- Acerola extract – concentrated form; sometimes with information about standardization on the label.
- Vitamin C with acerola – combinations in which acerola is part of the vitamin C source(s).
Please note: not every product with “acerola” contains the same amount of vitamin C. Therefore, always compare label and the quantities per daily dose.
What should you pay attention to when supplementing with acerola?
- Transparent composition: is “acerola powder” or “acerola extract” clearly stated, including quantity per dosage?
- Vitamin C value: check how much vitamin C the product actually provides per daily dose (this can come from acerola or from added vitamin C).
- Standardization (if stated): some extract specifications provide additional clarity about the consistency of the raw material.
- Excipients & allergens: check fillers, sweeteners and possible allergens if you are sensitive to these.
- Quality information: look at brand reliability, batch information and production standards that
the brand communicates.
Read label: acerola, vitamin C and claims
With acerola supplements it is useful to distinguish between:
- the amount of acerola (e.g. 250 mg acerola extract), and
- the amount of vitamin C that the product supplies (e.g. 200 mg vitamin C per daily dose).
General usage information
Always use the dosage recommended on the label of the specific product. Do you have questions about use in combination with medication, are you pregnant, breastfeeding or do you have a medical condition? Then consult with a doctor or pharmacist.
