Alpha lipoic acid, what is it exactly?

Alpha-lipoic acid is a naturally occurring fatty acid that is produced by your body and can also be obtained from food or ALA supplements.

In the body, alpha-lipoic acid is produced as an intermediate in energy production. More specifically, it is produced in the mitochondria, the energy factories of the cell. It is produced as a component of a complex enzymatic process known as the citric acid cycle. During this cycle, carbohydrates and fats are broken down to generate energy. The production of alpha-lipoic acid in the body requires several enzymes and cofactors, including thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin B6. However, the amount of alpha-lipoic acid in the body decreases as we age. Therefore, in some cases it may be necessary to obtain additional alpha-lipoic acid through the diet or through ALA supplements to meet the body's needs.

Alpha Lipoic Acid Advice

Unfortunately, European legislation does not allow us to make medical claims and not to name the possible benefits and exact effect of alpha lipoic acid. We therefore advise you to do your own research and to consult the scientific studies and experiences of alpha lipoic acid. However, we are allowed to give advice about the effect and benefits of alpha lipoic acid via WhatsApp or our contact button at the bottom right.

Alpha lipoic acid in food

Humans only produce alpha-lipoic acid in small amounts. That's why many buy alpha-lipoic acid supplements to optimize their intake. Animal products such as red meat and organ meats such as liver, heart and kidneys are great sources of alpha lipoic acid, but plant foods such as broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, and potatoes, green peas and Brussels sprouts also contain alpha lipoic acid.

  1. Spinach contains a relatively high concentration of alpha-lipoic acid. A portion of 100 grams of raw spinach contains about 0,2-0,3 mg of alpha-lipoic acid.
  2. Broccoli is another good source of alpha-lipoic acid. A 100-gram serving of raw broccoli contains about 0,2-0,3 mg of alpha-lipoic acid.
  3. Organ meats, such as liver and heart, contain relatively high concentrations of alpha-lipoic acid. A 100 gram serving of liver contains about 0,2-0,4 mg alpha-lipoic acid.
  4. Tomatoes are another good source of alpha-lipoic acid. A portion of 100 grams of raw tomatoes contains about 0,1-0,2 mg of alpha-lipoic acid.
  5. Peas are also a fairly good source of alpha-lipoic acid. A portion of 100 grams of cooked peas contains approximately 0,1-0,2 mg of alpha-lipoic acid.

How do alpha lipoic acid supplements work?

Antioxidants such as Vitamin C only dissolve in water or only in adipose tissue, such as Vitamin E. Alpha-lipoic acid is soluble in both fat and water. That means it is effective throughout the body.

  • Supplements can contain up to 1.000 times more alpha-lipoic acid than regular dietary sources.
  • It is both water and fat soluble, allowing it to act in any cell or tissue in the body.

Use alpha lipoic acid safely

Human studies with ALA supplements have shown that it is safe to use. Even at a dose of 1800 mg per day, no significant negative effects occurred; very rarely there is nausea, vomiting and dizziness. When supplementing with alpha-lipoic acid, the vitamin B1 supply should be sufficient. Animal research suggests that high doses of alpha-lipoic acid can be toxic in thiamine deficiency. Heavy drinkers often already have a vitamin B1 deficiency should avoid alpha-lipoic acid as this can increase to a vitamin B1 deficiency. Always consult your doctor before using your medication. ALA supplements are not suitable for children.

Tested and pure ALA supplements

Our ALA supplement has been tested by both the supplier and an independent laboratory and does not contain heavy metals or other toxins. Make sure that the alpha lipoic acid you buy has been tested. Many providers do not have their supplements tested for this or only with random samples. Every batch of alpha lipoic acid has been tested with us.

How do you use alpha lipoic acid?

  • Suitable for vegetarians
  • Recommended daily dose to a maximum of 1,8 g dissolved in water and preferably taken after a meal in the morning or evening or divided over 2 times during the day
  • Alpha-lipoic acid tends to clump. This would normally be prevented by adding an anti-caking agent, but we do not want to add such chemicals to our products. We believe that a better solution is to simply break up the clumps with a fork, spoon or similar, rather than adding unnecessary chemicals
  • Store in a cool and dark place, away from children
  • Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Includes free measuring spoon. The spoon contains 0,4 g of alpha-lipoic acid and is dishwasher safe.
  • For correct doses use a precision scale
  • In the event of illness and the use of medication, always consult the treating doctor
  • To live a healthy life, a healthy lifestyle is very important, as is a varied and balanced diet. Alpha Lipoic Acid supplements are no substitute for this.

European legislation and alpha lipoic acid

According to European legislation, we are not allowed to make medical claims on the use of Alpha Lipoic Acid. As a result, we cannot describe the exact effect of this supplement. We therefore advise you to do the research yourself. A good start for this is an orthomolecular site such as Orthoknowledge. They are allowed to name the possible health benefits because they do not sell the supplement online
